Nigerian marketing in 2026: the numbers that matter

Where Nigerians are online, which platforms are growing, what they trust and how much they're spending. The latest data in one place, and what it means for your 2027 plans.

The short version

  • 130MNigerians are still offline, more than half the population.
  • 47.8Madults that TikTok ads can reach, up 43% in a year. Instagram's ad reach fell 6%.
  • ~70%of Nigerian social media users say finding brands is a main reason they use social media.

Budgets for 2027 are being set now, and a lot of them are still built on how Nigerian marketing looked three years ago. The audience has moved, prices have changed what people buy, and the rules on social media advertising are now settled in court.

We pulled together the most reliable recent figures we could find, mainly from DataReportal's Digital 2026: Nigeria report, PwC's economic outlook and industry research on influencer marketing. Each section ends with what we think it means for a brand. All sources are listed at the bottom.

01 · The audienceMore than half of Nigeria is still offline

Nigeria had about 239 million people and 109 million internet users in late 2025, so internet penetration sits at roughly 45.5%. The number of users grew by about 2.5 million in a year, which is steady but slow next to population growth of nearly 5 million.

The people who are online also tend to be more urban and younger than the country as a whole, which is the audience most digital campaigns are already competing for.

What it means

Digital is essential, but it isn't the whole country. If you sell to the mass market outside the big cities, radio, outdoor, markets and on-ground activations still reach people that no ad platform can. If you sell to urban professionals, digital alone can work.

02 · The platformsThe audience has moved to TikTok and Facebook

Ad reach is the number of people a platform says its ads can reach. It isn't the same as active users, and DataReportal warns that some of the falls may come from platforms cleaning up accounts rather than people leaving. Even so, the direction is clear.

TikTok is now the biggest ad audience in Nigeria, reaching about 38% of adults, after adding roughly 14.5 million people in a year. Facebook is second and still growing, and it tends to reach a broader, older audience than the newer apps. YouTube grew 13%.

LinkedIn passed 13 million members, which matters if you sell to businesses, banks or professionals. Instagram is much smaller than many brands assume, at about 10 million, and its reported reach fell.

What it means

If Instagram is your main or only channel, you are probably missing most of the reach. Test TikTok and Facebook properly, with content made for each one rather than the same post copied across.

Instagram still earns its place for fashion, beauty and premium brands whose buyers are there. For B2B and fintech, LinkedIn is now big enough to plan around.

03 · DiscoverySocial media is where Nigerians find brands

of Nigerian social media users say finding brands is one of the main reasons they use social media, reported as the highest rate of any country measured.Source: DataReportal, Digital 2025: Nigeria, via Kolsquare

In most markets, people use social media mainly to keep in touch with friends or pass time. In Nigeria, a large share go there to look for products and businesses. That fits how many Nigerians buy: they find something on Instagram, TikTok or a WhatsApp status, check the page and the comments, then send a message to order.

What it means

Your social pages work like a shop window and a sales floor at the same time. Clear prices, real customer reviews, quick replies to DMs and a WhatsApp button that works will often do more for sales than another round of boosted posts.

04 · TrustPeople trust people more than adverts

of Nigerian consumers say they trust influencer recommendations over traditional advertising.Source: Brand Communicator (2025), via Kolsquare

Kolsquare counted about 61,500 active Nigerian creators with at least 5,000 Instagram followers and a mostly Nigerian audience in early 2026. Brands have plenty of choice, and the gap between a creator who sells and one who only gets likes is wide.

Follower count is a weak guide on its own. Bought followers and engagement groups are common, so engagement rate, comment quality and how well a creator's audience matches your customers matter more.

What it means

The right creator beats the biggest creator. Several smaller creators in your exact niche usually give you more trust per naira than one celebrity post. Ask for audience screenshots and past results, and track sales or DMs, not just views.

05 · SpendingCustomers are still careful with money

−2.5%

Fall in real household spending in 2025, from about ₦12.2 trillion to ₦11.9 trillion after adjusting for inflation.Source: PwC Nigeria Economic Outlook 2026, via Brand Communicator

In naira terms, household spending rose by almost 20% in 2025. But prices rose faster, so people actually bought less. Inflation did ease, falling to 14.45% in November 2025 from a peak of 34.6%, after eight straight months of decline. Prices are still rising, just more slowly, and buying power hasn't caught up.

What it means

Lead with value. Show prices, payment plans, bundles and proof that the product works. Performance campaigns that you can tie to sales or leads will be easier to defend in 2027 than awareness campaigns judged on reach alone.

06 · The rulesARCON approval now clearly covers social media

7 days

In April 2025, the Federal High Court in Lagos ruled that the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has the power to regulate advertising on social media, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and X (suit no. FHC/L/CS/1262/2024). The court described public social media pages as channels that reach mass audiences.

ARCON has since said that brands, agencies, influencers and content creators all need approval before sponsored content goes live. In the case behind the ruling, ARCON had issued a fine of ₦1 million per post for unapproved adverts. Its published vetting fees in 2023 were ₦7,500 for the standard seven-day route, with higher fees for two-day or one-day approval. Check current fees before you budget, as they may have changed.

What it means

Build approval time into every campaign plan, especially for influencer posts and time-sensitive dates like Black Friday or Sallah. Put responsibility for approval in writing in creator contracts.

07 · What to doFive moves for your 2027 plan

  1. Follow the attention. Give TikTok and Facebook a real test budget and content made for each platform. Don't let Instagram's habit set the plan.
  2. Plan for the offline half. If your customers are outside the big cities, keep radio, outdoor and on-ground activity in the mix.
  3. Treat your page as your shop. Prices, reviews, fast replies and a working WhatsApp link turn discovery into sales.
  4. Choose creators on trust, not size. Several niche creators with real engagement usually beat one big name.
  5. Lead with value and track sales. Customers are careful, so show the deal clearly and measure leads and orders, not just reach. Build ARCON approval time into every launch date.

QuestionsGood to know

What is the most used social media platform in Nigeria in 2026?

By ad reach, TikTok is the largest, with about 47.8 million adults reachable in late 2025, followed by Facebook at 38 million and YouTube at 30.5 million (DataReportal). WhatsApp is widely used for messaging and selling, but its reach isn't published in the same way.

How many internet users are there in Nigeria?

About 109 million in late 2025, or roughly 45.5% of a population of 239 million. That leaves about 130 million people offline (DataReportal, Digital 2026: Nigeria).

Do social media ads in Nigeria need ARCON approval?

Yes. A Federal High Court ruling in April 2025 confirmed that ARCON can regulate advertising on social media, and ARCON requires approval before ads go live, including sponsored influencer posts. The standard route takes about seven days. See our ARCON approval guide.

Is Instagram still worth it for Nigerian brands?

For fashion, beauty, food and premium brands whose customers use it, yes. But its ad reach is about 10 million, far below TikTok and Facebook, so it shouldn't be your only channel if you want scale.
